Soviet press keeps silence about Babyn Yar after the liberation of Kyiv

The first remark about Babyn Yar (narrowly ten words) we can find in Moscow “Pravda” (“Truth”) in the letter-gratitude to Comrade Stalin from 40 000 inhabitants of Kyiv for their rescue on 6.Õ².1943. There the number of victims is already enlarged, namely: “more than… 100 thousand are shot in dreadful Babyn Yar”.

The same short description of tragedy in Babyn Yar is placed in “Kyivska Pravda” (“Kyiv Truth”) of 1.²²².44. in the report of the state commission, headed by M.Hrushchov. Here there are only some one and a half sentences about the “greatest pestilence from all the history of mankind’. The witnesses told they saw how Germans threw infants into the ravines and buried them alive with the killed and wounded parents.  It was clearly seen how layers of ground moved because of the motions of still alive people”.

On the other hand there is much more detailed description of incineration of bodies (420 words), which affirms that during the work of Commission it was possible to “get convinced of atrocities, committed on jthe Russian population during the German occupation of Kyiv”.

In 1945 the book-brochureGermanscrimes in Kyivwas published in Moscow (author is K.Dubina). The words “Babyn Yar” are used there several times. There is an indication at Jews as the victims of that crime”.

In 1947 Ehrenburg vaguely descried the events in Babyn Yar in the book “Burya” (“Storm”), with the volume of more than 700 pages. KGB printed the “exact” description of Jewish tragedy in Babyn Yar in 1966 in the book of A. Kuznyetzov. The description is based on the evidence of witnesses, mostly an artiste puppet play D. Pronicheva. After this the subject of Babyn Yar vanished from Soviet editions for many years.

THE COMMUNIST UNDRGROUND IN KYIV DIDN’T TAKE NOTICE OF ANY ANNIHIATIONS IN BABYN YAR TILL THE AUTUMN 1943

Also the communists-members of underground organizations in Kyiv with Volodymyr Kudryashov at the head remained silent about the annihilation of Kyivan inhabitants or Jews in Babyn Yar. The communist underground in Kyiv had 250 radio transmitters then, which were hushed up and reported by radio in detail to the “Great land”, in particular about German terror against the inhabitants of Kyiv. However, for some reason or other they didn’t report about the annihilation of hundreds thousand people in Babyn Yar or somewhere in Kyiv, though their underground centre was situated in Lukyanivska, near Babyn Yar and Repiahiv ravines.

A SINGLE DOCUMENT OF BOLSHEVIST UNDERGROUND CONCERNING BABYN YAR IN KYIV WAS THE PAPER FROM THE AUTUMN 1043 ABOUT ANNIHILATION OF UKRAINIANS BY GERMANS

In 1993 the review of underground documents in party archives of then Institute of history under the CK of the communist party of Ukraine in Kyiv and Moscow archives. At that time Moscow didn’t even mention Babyn Yar.

All the documents on the subject in Kyiv were examined, namely two folders about the underground in Kyiv. The first of them had 302 pages of “reports, memoranda of organizing-instructor department of TsK KP(b)U”. One page there was found and that without a date, from the report about the activity of Kyiv underground. This report, which seemed to be the most believable, was probably made in 1945. On this page a standard postwar description of annihilation of Jews is recorded in about 65 words. In the second folder there were 187 pages of such materials, and only one page about the tragedy in Babyn Yar. From the context iot is possible to make a conclusion, that this page under the heading “Citizens and citizenesses of Kyiv” was printed by Bolshevist underground at the end of September 1943. There we read:

Who of Kyivans does not know about the German Gestapo affairs inBabyn Yar”. How many hundred thousands of Kyivan inhabitants died there during the two years of German “liberators’” ruling. The bloody hand of German Gestapo tortured more than a half of Kyivan population”.
